Tapio Wirkkala Rhythmic Coffee Table with metal legs, Asko 1950s.
Tapio Wirkkala rhythmic veneer coffee table with original iron laquered legs. Tapio Wirkkala began developing and refining this rhythmic veneer technique in the 1940s in collaboration with the Soinne Oy veneer factory. By manipulating the direction and angle of the thin outer veneer layer or plywood, he created striking three-dimensional patterns and leaf-like oval shapes. Asko later acquired the rights to this technique and produced various pieces of furniture using it, though only for a few years beginning in 1957. This particular table remains in beautiful original condition, featuring its original lacquered finish. The legs can be disassembeled to simplify the shipping.

About the designer : Tapio Wirkkala (1915–1985) was one of Finland’s most influential designers and artists, internationally known for reshaping modern Scandinavian design after World War II. He worked across glass, ceramics, metal, wood, plastic, graphic design, and sculpture, often blurring the line between industrial design and fine art. Wirkkala was deeply inspired by Finnish nature—ice, bark, leaves, waves, birds, and landscapes. Rather than decorative motifs, he translated natural structures and processes into form, texture, and function. His work often emphasizes: Organic, sculptural forms, Mastery of materials, Precision combined with poetic minimalism He famously studied natural phenomena obsessively, sometimes spending months refining a single object.
