About the designer : Eje Ahlgren was a Swedish furniture designer and interior architect, born in 1917 and active primarily during the mid-20th century, a formative period for Scandinavian modernism. He was educated at Konstfack in Stockholm and became known for designs that combined functional clarity with traditional craftsmanship. His work reflects the ideals of Swedish modern design: simplicity, human scale, durability, and careful material choices, often using solid wood such as birch or pine.

Ahlgren is best known for the chair Lilla Åland from 1955, which has become one of the most iconic Swedish chairs of the post-war era. Inspired by traditional Windsor chairs, it reinterprets folk furniture through modern proportions and refined detailing, making it both timeless and highly functional. The chair has been continuously produced and is still widely used in homes and public interiors, a testament to the lasting relevance of his design approach.

Beyond furniture, Ahlgren also worked extensively with interior architecture, designing cohesive environments for public buildings, restaurants, and offices. His interiors emphasized harmony between furniture, space, and everyday use rather than visual excess. Today, Eje Ahlgren’s work is highly regarded by collectors and design historians, and his designs are considered classic examples of Swedish modernism at its most restrained and enduring.
