About the designer : Hans Bergström was a Swedish designer best known for his pioneering work in lighting design and for founding the company Ateljé Lyktan. Born in 1910, Bergström trained as an engineer, which strongly influenced his design philosophy: he approached lamps not only as aesthetic objects but as technical instruments meant to shape and improve everyday life through light. This combination of engineering precision and human-centered design became a hallmark of his work.

In the 1930s, Bergström established Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden, initially producing lamps for his own interior design projects. Over time, the company grew into one of Scandinavia’s most influential lighting manufacturers. Bergström rejected overly ornate or decorative styles and instead focused on clean forms, thoughtful proportions, and materials that enhanced the quality and direction of light. His designs aligned closely with the ideals of Scandinavian modernism, emphasizing simplicity, functionality, and warmth.

Bergström’s lamps are notable for how they manage glare and diffuse light softly, creating comfortable and inviting interiors. He paid close attention to how light interacts with metal, glass, and shade geometry, often experimenting with indirect lighting and layered illumination long before these ideas became mainstream. Rather than treating lighting as an afterthought, he considered it a central architectural element that shapes space and mood.

Beyond his own designs, Hans Bergström played an important role as a mentor and collaborator, helping establish Ateljé Lyktan as a platform for future generations of Scandinavian designers. His influence persists today, both through his original lamp designs, many of which remain in production or are reissued, and through the enduring Scandinavian approach to lighting that prioritizes human comfort, clarity, and understated elegance.
