About the designer : Torsten Claeson is a Swedish furniture designer whose work illustrates a certain strand of Scandinavian mid-century craft- and folk-influenced design. Torsten Claeson was active as a furniture designer particularly in the 1930s–1940s and worked with the workshop Steneby Hemslöjd in Sweden. Claeson’s work stands at an intersection between traditional Swedish woodworking / hembygd / hemslöjd culture (local craftsmanship, use of pine, folk-inspired simplicity) and Scandinavian modernism — the early modern movement that valued function, material honesty and minimal ornamentation. His furniture reflects the mid-20th-century interest in rural simplicity and practicality, which perhaps contrasted with more classical or ornate furniture of earlier eras. Because of their age, material and craftsmanship, Claeson’s pieces are today often considered vintage / collectible, appreciated by collectors of Scandinavian mid-century furniture and those interested in the “hem-slöjd” (handcraft) tradition.
